When I think about why trustbuilding matters to me, I go back to a moment early in my journey into the police community and peace building journey.
I still remember a conversation with a friend who is an officer who discouraged me from joining the Police force. He said, “Why waste the money your parents spent raising you by joining the police force? It is suicidal.” His words cut deeply. In that moment, I felt the weight of fear, judgment, and hopelessness that so often surround policing.
But those words did not turn me away completely. Instead, they became a turning point. I chose to let them strengthen my resolve rather than break my spirit. I committed myself to proving that policing does not have to be defined by violence, corruption, or despair. It can be honorable. It can be meaningful. It can be a force for good when it is grounded in purpose, integrity, and a genuine heart for service.
Participating in trustbuilding work has brought me back to that original commitment. It has reminded me why I chose this path in the first place — not for power or status, but to serve, to protect, and to rebuild trust between the police and the communities we are meant to support. Through this journey, I am learning that trust is not demanded; it is earned through humility, listening, and consistent action.
