Bridging Beliefs in Indonesia

Datum

Indonesia continues to face growing tensions between religious and ethnic communities, particularly between Muslims and Christians. In response to these longstanding divisions, the Trustbuilding Program (TBP) Indonesia was launched in 2022. Operating in four cities, the program focuses on developing local leadership and healing historical wounds through open, honest dialogue.

One of the program's key milestones is the completion of Healing Historical Wounds, a powerful collection of 91 personal stories that highlight the transformative impact of trustbuilding across communities.

"Having experienced the long-standing conflict between Muslims and Christians in Indonesia, we understand how important it is not to let this division deepen," said Huda Miftahul, Trustbuilding Program manager. "Instead, we come together to talk and listen to one another."

TBP Indonesia employs a Training of Trainers (ToT) model, equipping individuals with the tools to lead interfaith dialogues in their own communities. "We can't always expect our political leaders to change, but ordinary people can," Huda said. "We can start by changing how we treat people of other faiths."

In 2023–2024, the TBP team hosted a three-day ToT retreat, bringing together 30 leaders from seven religious traditions. The goal: strengthen facilitation skills and deepen the practice of trustbuilding.

To engage young people, TBP uses creative, interactive approaches such as board games, arts, and cultural exchanges. "We design fun activities so people don't feel burdened talking about faith and religion," Huda explained. Participants frequently report increased empathy, self-awareness, and a renewed commitment to peacebuilding.

Looking ahead to 2025 and beyond, the TBP Indonesia team aims to expand its network of trained facilitators and introduce its trustbuilding approach to more interfaith community leaders. "By taking personal responsibility, we reflect on the values within our own faiths," said Huda. "For example, Christians are taught to love their neighbors—and in Islam, we are taught the same. We are brothers and sisters."

"We have common ground with people of different religions," Huda concluded. "We're learning about each other and choosing to change ourselves, rather than expecting others to change."
